Ai Weiwei – Bubble
Here’s a short film from our archives, featuring a rare English interview with Chinese artist Ai Weiwei talking about his ‘Bubble’ installation which showed at Art Basel Miami beach.
Well known for his involvement in the design of Beijing’s ‘birds nest’ Olympic stadium and his installation in the generator room of the Tate, which consisted of 8 million hand painted porcelain sunflower seeds, Ai Weiwei is no stranger to the lime light. In 2011 he was released following 81 days of detention in a Chinese prison and remains surrounded by allegations of ‘economic crimes’ and other offences but maintains his innocence citing intimidation by the Chinese Government as motivation for the accusations.
We were lucky enough to get this interview with the Artist, though we had to interrupt his breakfast at his Miami hotel. Ai Weiwei also has a habit of photographing everything, half way through the interview he stopped speaking, took out his camera and took a snap of me filming him!
